ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- RIT Softball’s spirits fell with the dropping temperature, and were swept in a pivotal doubleheader against defending NCAA Division III National Champs Ithaca College, 7-1 and 6-2.
The Tigers struggled with Ithaca and the inclement weather, in a series which will be a deciding factor for seeding in the Empire 8 tournament. The Tigers (17-5-2 overall and 5-3 in the Empire 8) dropped from second to third-place in the Empire 8 and now significantly trail Ithaca which stands at 11-1 in the league and 23-7 overall.
In the first game, the Bombers scored four runs before Danielle Miller answered with one of her own when on Elaine Vonderembse (Oak Harbor, OH/Genoa Area)'s RBI double in the bottom of the third. Pitcher Shari McNamara (Rome, NY/Rome Catholic) recorded seven strikeouts despite giving up two homers in the loss.
RIT showed signs of life in the rematch, keeping the game tied 2-2 until the bottom of the fifth. Meg Varner (Apalachin, NY/Owego Free Academy) recorded two RBI in the effort, while McNamara posted five K's falling to 11-4 on the season after collecting Co-Empire 8 Pitcher of the Week honors.
The Tigers get ready to play again on Thursday at cross-town rival University of Rochester.
