UTICA, N.Y. -- The Utica College men's lacrosse team recorded its first Empire 8 win of the season with a 17-11 victory against Rochester Institute of Technology Tuesday afternoon.

Whether it was RIT (6-5, 3-2 Empire 8) still reeling from Saturday's 21-7 loss to Nazareth or the Pioneers putting together one of their strongest games of the season -- the first half scoring was all Utica.

The Pioneers (5-6, 1-5 Empire 8) scored nine of the first 10 goals in the contest securing a 9-1 lead with six minutes to go in the first half and maintained a 9-2 margin at the intermission. Matt Donaldson sparked the opening run scoring two of his four goals on the afternoon.

RIT closed the gap to 10-5 at the end of the third quarter and cut the lead to four goals 12-8 at the 8:26 mark of the fourth quarter. However, Utica scored four of the next five markers to pull ahead 16-9 with 2:36 remaining. Utica's Pete Masterpole scored two of his three goals on the day during the run.

RIT was paced by freshman attackman Zach Bednarz (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) who finished with four goals, while Dave Griffin (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee H.S.) added two goals for the Tigers. RIT resumes action on Saturday, April 26 when it travels to Hartwick at 1 p.m.
