ROCHESTER, N.Y. - After letting a 12-4 halftime lead slip away in last year's 14-13 loss against Rochester Institute of Technology, the No. 15 Nazareth College men's lacrosse team looked back only to refresh its memory that no lead is safe and play the full 60 minutes -- that's exactly what the Golden Flyers did in their 21-7 victory Saturday afternoon at RIT Field.
After building a 4-1 lead after the first quarter, Nazareth controlled possession winning all nine face-offs in the second and outscored RIT 7-2 in the second to go into the locker room with an 11-3 lead. Naz's Jason Mordaci (Rochester, N.Y.) led the first-half charge with three of his four goals on the afternoon, while Bryan Coon scored three of his four in the first half.
The thoughts of another dramatic RIT comeback were renewed when the Tigers cut the lead to 12-6 at the end of the third quarter. However, those thoughts were quickly halted when Nazareth scored eight unanswered goals including two man-up scores to open the fourth quarter expanding the Golden Flyers' advantage to 20-6. Brandon Brown (Ithaca, N.Y.) scored two of his four goals on the afternoon on the 8-0 run, while Bryan Adams (Schenectady, N.Y.) recorded one of his three in the run.
RIT's Andrew Pratt (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit H.S.) (Rochester, N.Y.) completed the hat-trick in anti-climactic fashion scoring the Tigers final goal of the day, while Chris Copeland (Webster, NY/Webster) (Webster, N.Y.) added two goals and an assist.
Nazareth outshot RIT 50-30 on the day, including 36-16 in shots on goal. Nazareth goalie Don Green recorded seven saves and allowed seven goals in the victory, while RIT goalie Jon Sinclair (Herndon, VA/Herndon H.S.) played 48:38 allowing 16 goals and made 14 saves and Luke Pitcher (Painted Post, NY/Corning West) allowed five goals and made one save in 11:22 of relief.
The Tigers resume action at Utica on Tuesday, April 22 at 4 p.m., while Nazareth hosts Oswego State on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
