PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- The Rochester Institute of Technology softball team split an Empire 8 doubleheader at St. John Fisher winning the first game 4-0 and then losing 1-0 in eight innings in the night cap .
Shari McNamara (Rome, NY/Rome Catholic) (8-2) pitched both games for the Tigers with a pair of complete games with a four-hit 4-0 shutout in the first game with six strikeouts, while she allowed an unearned run in eight innings with six strikeouts suffering the 1-0 loss in the second game.
The loss marked the first loss for RIT in the Empire 8 (13-3-2 overall, 3-1 Empire 8), while St. John Fisher is (17-7-1 overall and 9-3 Empire 8). Ithaca leads the league with a 7-1 record.
Megan Varner went 3-for-3 with a triple. two runs scored and an RBI in the first game for the Tigers, while Elain Vonderembse, Ashley Kennedy and Kelly Iagulli (Eagle River, AK/Chugiak) all went 2-for-4.
RIT scored twice in the top halves of the fifth and seventh innings in the first game.
In the second game, the teams remained scoreless through seven innings, but Fisher scored a run in the top of the seventh to pull out the win. Jen Telle pinch ran for Tiffany Buk after being placed at second base via the international tiebreaker. Then advanced to third on Amanda Kent's sacrifice bunt to third base, Following a Heather Luksch fly out to first, Jolynn Daggett double to right center scoring Telle from third and Michelle Dorscheid struck out looking.
RIT had a chance in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game when Tonya Campbell (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) was on second and Varner sacrifice bunted Campbell to third and then Vonderembse hit a grounder to second base and Campbell went from third, but St. John Fisher second baseman Luksch was playing in and threw Campbell out at home. Then Kennedy flew out to left field to end the game.
While McNamara was in fine pitching form in both games, Cardinals' pitcher Amanda Herberger was just as strong in the second game allowing seven hits and no runs in eight innings with nine strikeouts to improve to 7-1 on the year.
The Tigers resume action on Friday when they host Utica College for an Empire 8 doubleheader with first pitch at 4 p.m.
