RIT Softball Extends Winning Streak to Four Games with Sweep of Keuka

Megan Varner went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI in the first game and followed with two runs scored and a two-RBI single in the second game.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Rochester Institute of Technology softball team recorded a doubleheader sweep and its fourth consecutive win downing Keuka College 9-1 and 5-2 to improve to 12-2-2 overall Monday afternoon at RIT Field.

In the first game, RIT was tied with Keuka 1-1 in the middle of the fifth inning, but the Tigers erupted for five runs in the bottom half of the inning and then added three more runs to end the game under the eight-run rule.

Caitlin Krumm (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville North) led off the bottom of the fifth singling to right field. Kate Berens delivered a single down the left field line to plate Krumm. Berens advanced to second on a passed ball and then Tonya Campbell (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) singled moving Berens to third.

After Campbell stole second, she advanced to third when Berens scored on an error by shortstop Melissa McElwain. Megan Varner reached on a fielder's choice and Campbell scored, then Elaine Vonderembse (Oak Harbor, OH/Genoa Area) reached on a fielder's choice and Varner advanced to second on an error by shortstop McElwain. Then Ashley Kennedy belted an rbi single to right center scoring Varner and Vonderembse went to second. After Vonderembse was forced out at third on Shari McNamara (Rome, NY/Rome Catholic)'s grounder, Kelly Iagulli (Eagle River, AK/Chugiak) reached on an error by third baseman Jenelle Wait which scored Kennedy. RIT closed out the inning with the bases loaded, scoring five runs on five hits and three Keuka errors.

RIT starter Shari McNamara (Rome, NY/Rome Catholic) improved to 7-1 on the year and her earned run average now stands at 0.36 allowing only her third earned run of the season on three hits and struck out five Storm batters.

The second game, RIT took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning on an error by Keuka catcher Giget Heale's throw to third trying to get Elaine Vonderembse (Oak Harbor, OH/Genoa Area), but the throw went over third baseman Lindsay Baker's head scoring Vonderembse. Then following Heidi Schille (Lake George, NY/Lake George)'s pop out to shortstop, Kennedy delivered another clutch single scoring Varner.

Keuka (3-5) responded in the top half of the sixth inning tying the game with two runs when Heale led off the inning with a single to center field, then Tauzel reached on an error by third baseman Danielle Miller with a wide throw to first base. Heale advanced to third and Tauzel to second on Baker's ground out to the pitcher Schille and then Heale scored on Nicole Moody's ground out to the Schille and Tauzel advanced to third Margaret Fay singled to left field scoring Tauzel to close out the scoring.

However, RIT bounced back with a three-run sixth led by Jess Fabin's triple to right field to start the inning off. Elizabeth Angell (Whitefield, ME/Erskine Academy) plated Fabin with a single to left center and Angell advanced to second on a wild pitch. Following a Danielle Iuppa ground out to the pitcher, Vonderembse singled to left field and then stole second. Then Varner delivered a two-run single to right center plating Angell and Vonderembse.

Schille improved to 5-1 on the year with the complete game allowing seven hits, two runs (both unearned) and struck out four batters.

RIT looks to extend its winning streak and remain unbeaten in the Empire when it travels to St. John Fisher for a tough doubleheader on Thursday, April 17 at 3 p.m.
