ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Rochester Institute of Technology softball team opened the Empire 8 season with a doubleheader sweep of Alfred University 2-1 and 9-2 Saturday afternoon at RIT Field.
In the first game, Shari McNamara (Rome, NY/Rome Catholic) went the distance allowing one run on six hits and struck out seven en route to a 2-1 victory to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Two errors proved costly for Alfred in the first game, despite taking the early 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Alfred pitcher Brandi Backus led off the inning with a single. Backus advanced to second on a wild pitch and was sacrificed to third by Adrienne Egglinger and then scored on a single by Jacque Krycia.
RIT scored runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth to take the lead by virtue of Alfred errors. In the fourth Caitlin Krumm (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville North) reached on an error by shortstop Rachel Porter and then Gretchen Goodhue (Springvale, ME/Sanford) doubled Krumm home. In the fifth Elaine Vonderembse (Oak Harbor, OH/Genoa Area) reached on an error by third baseman Kristina Goldberg and then Ashley Kennedy doubled advancing Vonderembse to third and both advanced on a wild pitch plating Vonderembse.
In the second game, Alfred took a 2-1 lead at the end of the first inning.
RIT scored in the top half of the first thanks to another Alfred error by pitcher Brittany Curran. Tonya Campbell (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) earned the free trip and then after a pair of sacrifices by Megan Varner and Vonderembse, Ashley Kennedy singled home Campbell.
Alfred scored a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning by virtue of an error and a home run by Sarah Mizer. After Andrea Crandall reached on an error by RIT shortstop Goodhue and then was sacrificed to second by Jacque Krycia and following a fly out by Alicia DeAndrea, Mizer hit a two-run home run.
The Tigers added a run in the top of the fourth to tie the game and it stood that way until RIT erupted for seven runs on seven hits in the top of the seventh. Vonderembse and Kennedy doubled home two runs in the inning.
RIT's game against Cortland on Sunday, April 12 was cancelled due to the Red Dragons having to reschedule a league game with the uncooperative spring weather, thus the Tigers resume action on Monday, April 13 hosting Keuka for a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
