Cocoa Beach, Fla. -- The Rochester Institute of Technology baseball team finished up its spring trip with a strong 16-7 victory over Waynesburg.
RIT came out of the gates with hot bats, and did not look back. After shutting down Waynesburg 1,2,3 in the top of the first RIT scored eight runs in their half of the inning. Andy Zach started the inning with a leadoff double to center field. After Marty Maynard (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) singled and Eric Hauser (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) walked Ben Fuller (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) drove in a run with a bases loaded single. John Byrne (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) had an RBI sac fly, then Colin Bradley (Barre, VT/Spaulding High School) came through with the biggest blow, a two RBI double to deep center field. Mark Sapienza (Avon, NY/Avon Central) followed with a single, and Jeff Ware (Orchard Park, NY/St. Francis), Jamie Schild (Fairport, NY/Fairport), and Maynard also came through with RBI singles. Zach and Hauser each had bases loaded walks to get RBIs in the inning.
Tiger starter Paul Diedrich (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) (1-0) benefitted from the offensive support and picked up the win as he was able to keep Waynesburg off the board until the fourth, where they were able to push across four runs. Waynesburg also threatened in the fifth inning, when they plated three more runs, making the score 10-7. The Tigers answered the threat though, scoring three runs of their own in the fifth when Jeff Ware (Orchard Park, NY/St. Francis) led off with a hit by pitch and was driven in by Maynard, who went 3-5 for the day with three RBI and two runs scored. Maynard then stole second and was driven in by Hauser's single. Fuller finished the scoring when he drove in Hauser with a single to left field.
RIT put the game out of reach when they scored three more runs in the sixth inning. The inning was started off by Colin Bradley (Barre, VT/Spaulding High School), who was just a homerun short of batting for the cycle on the day when he went 3-4 with three RBI and three runs scored, singled and scored on Jeff Ware (Orchard Park, NY/St. Francis)'s single. Andy Zach and Marty Maynard (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) also had RBIs in the inning to close out the scoring.
RIT, with a record of 4-3, heads back and is off until they take a trip to Washington D.C. to take on Catholic on March 23rd and 24th.
