Click for BoxscoreROCHESTER, NY- The RIT women's soccer team could not have asked for better weather this afternoon as they took on the Pioneers of Utica College on RIT Field.
Utica came into today's match at 8-1-1 on the season, but neither team established definite control in the game's early minutes. As the game moved on, though, the Tiger defense was able to keep Utica at bay, and RIT struck first. In the tenth minute, Brooke Thompson (Avon Lake, OH/Avon Lake) (Avon Lake, OH/Avon Lake) ripped a direct shot over the head of Pioneer keeper Ashley Baker for the Tigers' goal. Both RIT and Utica had a few scoring chances in the remainder of the half, but were unable to capitalize. At the halftime horn, RIT was still up 1-0.
Many players were able to contribute in the second half, as RIT gained an advantage. The Tigers took eight shots, and capitalized off the foot of Mallory Frost (Barre, VT/Spaulding) in the 69th minute, her fifth of the season. Frost now leads the team in scoring. despite the efforts of a strong Utica team, they were unable to answer RIT's goals. As the final horn sounded, RIT was victorious, 2-0. The team improves to 7-5-0 and 2-2 within the Empire 8. Goalkeeper Carrie Yehle (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) faced 8 shots, making five saves on the day.
The Tigers will play next at St. John Fisher on Tueday at 7 pm.
