Click for BoxscoreROCHESTER, NY- The RIT women's soccer team took on Elmira College this afternoon, and despite tough play, were defeated 3-2.
At the start, the Soaring Eagles appeared to have the advantage, although each team had equal scoring opportunities. Elmira opened the scoring just eight minutes into the contest as Megan Callahan scored the first of two goals from the top of the box, past a leaping Carrie Yehle (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa). Facing a 2-0 deficit in the 30th minute, RIT's Melanie Lowe (Kingston, Jamaica/Northfield Mount Hermon) (Kingston, Jamaica/Northfield Mt. Hermon) fired a shot past Elmira's Christine Zalusky off an assist from Mallory Frost (Barre, VT/Spaulding) to put the Tigers on the board.
In the second half, RIT was unable to capitalize early despite the eight shots they took on goal. In the 72nd minute, Elmira's Callahan scored the second of her two markers; goalie Carrie Yehle (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) made a great initial save, but the ball rebounded back to Callahan, who got it past the Tiger keeper to make the score 3-1. The Tigers would respond just five minutes later, off the foot of Brittany Peters (Marion, NY/Marion) in the 77th minute. Despite several more close scoring chances taken by RIT, the score remained 3-2 until the final horn.
Keeper Carrie Yehle (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) made six saves in 90 minutes of work, and faced 12 shots overall. RIT falls to 6-4-0 on the season and will face Nazareth College at Nazareth on October 8.
