CORTLAND, N.Y. - Two first-half goals were the only scoring in a 1-1 double-overtime tie between the Rochester Institute of Technology men's soccer team and Cortland State, but there were plenty of chances on both sides to break the exciting contest.
Cortland's Kevin Russell put the Red Dragons ahead 1-0 at the 14:51 mark of the first half as he dribbled across the field and then past an RIT defender hitting it far post. However, just two minutes later Jeff Prescott who was subbed into the game wasted little time with impacting the game scoring off a Rick Anthony serve to tie the game.
The game was as even as it could get as Cortland (3-0-1) held a slight 20-19 shot advantage, corner kicks were 8-6 in favor of the Red Dragons and saves were eight for Cortland's Greg Montano and seven for RIT's Brian Lenzo.
RIT had several chances to take the lead in the second half and two strong chancesto end the game in overtime. Nuno Monteiro had both big chances in regulation in the 52nd minute on a breakaway his shot was saved by Cortland goalkeeper Greg Montano and then in the 64th minute Montiero shot was just wide of the goal. In overtime, Michael Lawson hit a shot wide of the far post. Then on a restart after Cortland was whistled for a foul about 35 yards out in the middle of the field nearing the end of the second 10-minute overtime, Travis Proctor hit a bomb catching Montano off guard and it went into the net but just after time expired.
RIT (1-1-1) continues on the road with a two-game road trip to the North Country next weekend at St. Lawrence on Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. and then closes out the trip at Clarkson on Sept. 14 at 2 p.m.
