ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The RIT Women's Soccer team continued their winning ways Friday afternoon by defeating Clarkson 2-1 for their fifth straight victory improving to 6-1-0 on the season.
The Tigers dominated the first half of the game outshooting Clarkson 14-6, but goalkeeper Shaina Bellis (Spencerport, N.Y.) helped keep the Golden Knights close recording 11 saves. Much of the action in the first period remained on Clarkson's half of the field but the game remained tied 0-0 at the half.
RIT senior midfielder Trisha Schepler (Hilton, N.Y.) broke the tie by blasting a shot over Bellis' head off a misplayed clear 11:31 into the second half. Ashley Hall (Kutztown, Pa.) helped ensure the victory by adding an insurance goal in the 85th minute off a pass from Melanie Lowe (Kingston, Jamaica) -- which proved to be the game-winner.
A scrum in front of RIT's net at the 86th minute helped Clarkson's Linda Fernandez (Kennebunkport, Maine) poke a shot past Carrie Yehle (Hilton, N.Y.). Two corner kicks in the final minute of play by Clarkson almost put the game into overtime, but a critical team save by RIT's defense just ahead of the goal line denied the effort. Clarkson outshot RIT in the second half 9-5.
RIT travels to cross-town rival University of Rochester on Tuesday, Sept. 24th at 4 p.m.
