A lifelong resident of Rochester, N.Y., J. Roger Dykes joined the RIT staff in 1972. At the time of his appointment, RIT fielded 12 varsity sports. When he retired in 1997, there were 23 varsity sports. During his tenure, he promoted teams that participated in 140 NCAA championships. Among them, men’s hockey captured two national titles. Individually, four athletes won NCAA crowns. Dykes is most proud of his sports information internship program that prepared interns and students for the profession. Today, five former employees are enjoying successful sports information careers. In addition to his selection for the Hall of Fame, Dykes has been cited three times by his peers. In 1994, he received the Eastern College Athletic Conference Irving T. Marsh Award. In 1996 the College of Sport Information Directors of America honored him with the Warren Berg Award. In 1997, he received the Al Weber Award from the Rochester Press Radio Club.
