Through the efforts of Russel Carter, golf became a varsity sport in 1960. Carter captained the squad all four years and was the first RIT player to compete in the NCAA’s. He also took part in two fall ECAC championships. Carter averaged 79.9 strokes for his four seasons, with his best year coming in 1961-62 (78.1 average). During his tenure the Tigers won 27 and lost seven. Carter is the former school record holder for best round (72 vs. Alfred), best season average (78.1) and career won-lost record (18-15-1). Along with golf, Carter was active in numerous Institute activities. He served as president of the RIT Lettermen’s Club, chairman of the Student Legislative Committee and was a member of the RIT Alumni Executive Committee.
