Led by head coach Brian Mason, men’s hockey captured the NCAA Division II Championship, the first team title in the history of the institute. RIT entered the 1983 NCAA Tournament with an at-large bid and proceeded to defeat Mankato State in a two-game, total-goal first round series at Ritter Arena, 9-7. The Tigers moved on to University of Mass-Lowell and toppled the tourney favorite in the semifinals, 4-1 before winning the championship, 4-2 over Bemidji State. RIT finished with a 23-9-0 overall record and had 12 players score at least 20 points. Chris Johnstone led the team in scoring with 60 points, while Dave Burkholder won all 23 games in goal.
