Krystina Barnum (formerly Bachner) begins her sixth season as the head men's tennis coach and eighth as the head women’s tennis coach. She is just the third head coach in the 40-year history of the RIT women’s tennis program, following Hall of Famer Ann Nealon and former All-Empire 8 performer Frank Solome.
In 2010, Barnum led the women's squad to a 9-4 mark and had the Tigers in contention for the Empire 8 regular season title until the final day of the year. She coached Empire 8 Rookie of the Year Maite Vera and three-time Empire 8 first team selection, and 2008 Player of the Year, Amanda Berg. Overall, Barnum's players have earned a total of 16 all-conference accolades. She has led the Tigers to a 34-20 mark in four seasons.
In Barnum's second season with the men, RIT finished 7-7 and qualified for the Empire 8 Tournament. Four Tigers earned All-Empire 8 honors.
Under the tutelage of Barnum, the Tigers have excelled in the classroom as well, performing well above the university’s average.
Barnum, originally from Webster, graduated from Long Island University in 2006, with a bachelor’s degree in business management and marketing. While at LIU, she played four years of Division I varsity tennis, primarily at first doubles and third singles. Barnum was a three-year captain for the Blackbirds and was named the team’s Most Improved Player in 2003 and 2004. She earned All-Northeast Conference second-team honors in both singles and doubles three times.
In the classroom, Barnum excelled as well, earning Dean’s List honors during all four years and finishing with a sparkling 3.58 grade-point average. She also was a member of the LIU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, the Cooperative Education Program and the American Advertising Federation.
Barnum graduated from Webster Schroeder High School in 2002. She played four years of varsity tennis at Schroeder and was an All-Monroe County selection in 2000 and 2001.
Barnum, who is a fully certified United States Tennis Association professional, also works at the Tennis Club of Rochester as the front desk coordinator, singles league coordinator, and assistant professional.
In May 2013, Barnum earned a master's degree in sport administration from Canisius College. She resides in Victor with her husband, Todd.
