Matt Joseph won the decathlon and broke a 29-year old school record, posting a score of 6,602 points at the ECAC Championships hosted by Springfield College over the weekend. Joseph, who will compete at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday May 21, and Friday May 22 at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio, broke Mike Singleton's previous record of 6,538 points, set in 1980. Joseph's score of 6,602 points ranks him seventh in the nation heading into the NCAA's. Joseph's score narrowly missed the ECAC Championship record and a Blake Track record (6,613 pts.). Joseph bested a field which featured six NCAA Provisional Qualifiers. Matt also enjoyed five career personal bests (100-meters, long jump, shot put, javelin, 1,500-meters) during the decathalon competition. He beat second-place Benjamin Roy of Rensselaer by 367 points.
