Senior oarsman Christopher Frey helped lead the Men’s Varisty 8 to a win over Ithaca College and the University of Rochester today on the Cayuga Inlet in Ithaca, NY. Frey, of Reisterstown, Maryland rows port side and sits six seat in the Varsity 8.

After placing first at the Dad Vail Regatta in the lightweight Varsity 4 event last Spring, resulting in the first IRA appearance in program history, the men’s team placed second in the Collegiate 4 race at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in the Fall. Frey was a member of both boats. Following the fall season, Frey voiced the goal of beating Ithaca at Ithaca, a feat that he had yet to accomplish in his four years of rowing. Today RIT defeated Ithaca by 1.5 seconds, with a time of 6:13.0. The University of Rochester finished third with a time of 6:33.3.

An athlete who leads by example, Frey is consistently among the top erg scores on the men’s team. Head Coach Jim Bodenstedt says of Frey, “It has been a pleasure and an honor to coach Chris for the last four years. Chris’ leadership, combined with his athleticism, has raised the bar for RIT oarsmen. In addition, he cares very deeply about the men’s and women’s programs, and is an excellent representative for our team. I look forward to working with Chris and the rest of the oarsmen as we continue our pursuit of a New York State Championship.”
