The women’s track and field team traveled to the University of Rochester to compete in the 2002 University of Rochester Ice Breakers Meet to kick off the 2002-2003 winter and spring track and field season.

The Tigers were led by freshman Allison Griggs (Salem, Conn./East Lyme). Griggs, competing in her first collegiate meet had an extremely impressive showing in the shot put and 20 pound weight throw. Griggs captured school records of 12.52m in the shot put and 12.69m in the weight throw. Griggs threw to first and second place in these two events, respectively.

Additionally, Griggs’ performance was impressive because “she threw very close to her own all-time best performance in the shot put and threw two feet further than her previous best in the weight throw” noted Tigers coach Dave Warth. Warth added that “Allison is very coachable and continues to refine and improve her technique under the guidance of assistant coach Bill Quinlisk, while also improving her strength and quickness.” Griggs is currently 18 cm away from qualifying provisionally for the NCAA Championships in the shot put.

Allison will be even more of an instrumental force of the Tigers’ success during the spring season when Griggs will add the discus and the hammer throw to her arsenal of events. Last year, Griggs finished in the top six at the National Scholastic Championship in the hammer throw.

The Tigers travel to St. Lawrence University for Saturday’s St. Lawrence Holiday Relays with an 11 a.m. start.
