Matt Garbowsky (St. George, Ontario/Powell River Kings) of the RIT men's hockey team is one of 59 nominees for the Hobey Baker Award, college hockey's most prestigious individual honor. click here). The first phase ends March 8 and the list will be narrowed down to 10 semifinalists with the second phase beginning on March 19.
Garbowsky, named the Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week on Nov. 18 and Dec. 16, continues to lead all of Division I with 14 goals and is second with 285 face-off wins, tied for sixth three game-winning tallies and eighth with 23 points. Garbowsky has had a hand on 48.9 percent (23-of-47) of RIT's goals this season, highest in the nation.
He had 18 points during a 10-game point-scoring streak from Oct. 18 to Nov. 21. The 10-game streak was one shy of the school record. Garbowsky has five multiple-point outings this season, including a three-game stretch from Nov. 14-21 with nine points on six goals and three assists. Garbowsky scored his first career hat-trick and the seventh of RIT's Division I era in a 3-3 tie at Canisius on Nov. 14. He tied a career-high with four points in a 5-1 win over Sacred Heart on Nov. 21.
Garbowsky currently has 83 career points on 36 goals and 47 assists in 106 contests. He recorded a career-high 33 points on 11 goals and 22 assists in 2012-13.
The Tigers return to action this weekend as league foe American International comes to the Gene Polisseni Center. Friday and Saturday's contests get underway at 7:05 p.m.
