ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT men's hockey team opened the Division I era in fine fashion with a 5-4 win over the University of Waterloo in front of a packed house at Ritter Arena. Sophomore
Matt Smith (Toronto, ON/Kitchener Dutchmen) (Toronto, NY) paced the Tigers with a pair of goals and freshman
Jesse Newman (Westbank, BC/Trail) (Westbank, BC) added four assists.
Waterloo took an early 1-0 lead when Kevin Hurley scored on a rebound at 1:06. Matt Levicki took a shot that Jocelyn Guimond (St.-Edouard-de-Lotbiniere, PQ/Williams Lake) saved. The rebound came to Hurley who's initial shot was saved by Guimond but his rebound was a perfect shot over Guimond's shoulder.
Sophomore Darrell Draper (Tigard, OR/Cowichon Capitals) (Tigard, OR) tied the score at 1-1 at the 10:41 mark of the first. Marc Hyman (Thornhill, ON/Thornhill Rattlers) (Thornhill, ON) ripped a shot from the point. The rebound came right to Draper who one-timed it past Waterloo goalie Curtis Darling.
Matt Smith (Toronto, ON/Kitchener Dutchmen), who led RIT in power play goals in 2004-05, picked up right were he left off with a power play goal at 18:06 of the first, giving RIT the 2-1 lead. Justin Hofstetter (Bright, ON/Cambridge Winterhawks) (Bright, ON) and Jesse Newman (Westbank, BC/Trail) picked up the assists.
Simon Lambert (Ste.-Therese, PQ/Cumberland Grads) (Ste.-Therese, PQ) gave the Tigers a 3-1 lead at the 10:46 mark of the second period. He took a beautiful pass from Newman and ripped a shot past Darling for the Tigers second power play goal of the night.
After another Smith power play goal made it 4-1 sophomore Brent Patry (Ottawa, ON/Cumberland Grads) (Ottawa, ON) added RIT's fourth power play goal of the evening, giving RIT a 5-1 lead.
Waterloo got goals from Kevin Hurley and a pair from Shene Hart to cut RIT's lead to 5-4 but it was too little too late as time ran out on the Warriors.
RIT was 4-for-13 on the power play and out shot Waterloo 56-38. RIT goalie Jocelyn Guimond (St.-Edouard-de-Lotbiniere, PQ/Williams Lake) (St.-Edouard-de-Lotbiniere, PQ) stopped 16 of the 17 shots he faced, picking up the victory. George Eliopoulos (Markham, ON/St. Michael's Buzzers) (Markham, ON) made 18 saves, allowing three goals.
