In the 30 years that Lou Spiotti has led RIT as Athletic Director, he has developed one of the finest and most extensive NCAA intercollegiate athletic and recreation programs envied by many universities. Spiotti has been a driving force and inspirational leader in all of these activities. During Spiotti’s reign, he developed a program of intercollegiate athletics that grew from 15 sports for men and women with approximately 275 student athletes to one that now supports 24 sports and 600+ student athletes. He was the driving force behind men’s hockey moving to Division I in 2005. In addition, Spiotti created an infrastructure of state-of-the-art facilities and support services that allowed for the university’s programs to achieve national caliber success levels.
Under his leadership, RIT student-athletes have consistently achieved 3.0 GPA and higher. This past year, his teams achieved a 3.16 GPA. This is significantly higher than the student population in general. Nationally, RIT is a leader in academic achievement and graduation rates. Spiotti led the athletics program through Title IX Compliance and helped women’s sports programs grow from six varsity sports to twelve. He has also served as President of the Empire 8 Conference, ICAC, New York Collegiate Hockey Association and United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association over his career.
