From 1980 until 1996, Kathy Vangeli guided the women’s swimming team to regional and national prominence. She had a profound impact on the lives of hundreds of student-athletes during a brilliant coaching career. A native of Cortland, N.Y., Kathy led her teams to 11 NCAA Division III championships resulting in 44 All-Americans and countless New York State and Empire Athletic Association champions. Four of her former swimmers and All-Americans have been inducted into the RIT Sports Hall of Fame, including Debbie Dourlain, Mary Beth Breckenridge Bakerink, Judy Baker Bablok and Nancy Dowdall Lesniowski. RIT’s best finishes in the nationals resulted in 11th places in 1981-82 and 1983-84 and a 15th place showing in 1982-83. In dual meet competition, Kathy guided teams to 11-1 (1982-83) and 12-1 (1983-84) marks.
