John Reid certainly made a name for himself on the RIT mat. In four years, the native of Cincinnati, Ohio grappled his way to a 59-35-2 overall record. Competing at 126 and 134 pounds, he captured the New York State Intercollegiate Championship in 1978, won three Empire Athletic Association (EAA) titles and qualified for three NCAA College Division Championships. In the mid-70s, wrestlers from Divisions II and III were paired in the national competition. Reid also competed in the annual RIT Invitational, where teams from all divisions grappled for honors. Reid won the 1976 crown and was runner-up in 1975. Co-captain of the 1977-78 team, Reid is considered one of the finest wrestlers in RIT history. Prior to coming to RIT, he competed in the 1973 World Games for the Deaf and won a silver medal in Freestyle competition held in Malmo, Sweden. After finishing his eligibility at RIT, he remained as an assistant coach from 1978 to 1983. He continued competing in the World Games for the Deaf, winning a bronze medal in Greco-Roman in 1981 in Cologne, West Germany. In 1989 he captured the silver medal in Freestyle in Christchurch, New Zealand.
