James Heffer was the first head coach of the RIT men’s varsity hockey team, serving from 1962-68. His teams compiled a 70-27-2 record over his six seasons, including a 17-0-1 mark in 1963-64, a season before team attained varsity status. While head coach of the Tigers, Heffer’s teams played their home games in downtown Rochester at Ritter-Clark arena, later known as the Skating Institute of Rochester. Heffer’s son Doug, played at RIT from 1973-77, scoring 100 career points and tallying seven career hat-tricks.
