In his four years, Gregory Coughlan gathered enough accolades to overflow his own trophy case. The 1993 Senior Athlete of the Year, Coughlan was a three-time All-American in track and cross county. Three of his four years RIT won ECAC championships. He was also the first four-time All-Empire Athletic Association selection in RIT cross country history. RIT won two team titles. Coughlan garnered his All-American titles by placing sixth in the 1992 NCAA Outdoor Track Championships, covering 5,000 meters in 14:46.92. The following year he placed fifth in the indoor, 5,000-meter championship, clocked in 14:32.19. In 1992 he earned All-American honors in cross country by placing 20th in the NCAA 8,000 meters with a time of 25:25.6. Equal in the classroom, Coughlan maintained a 3.46 grade point average in graphic design and received the school's Ellingson Award as a junior in 1992 for academic excellence by an athlete. He became the first RIT athlete to receive both the Ellingson and Senior Athlete of the Year awards, coming in successive years. In the summer of 1993 Coughlan competed in the World Deaf Olympics in Bulgaria and won gold medals in the 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters and marathon.
