When it comes to defenders, Ed Purcell was one of the best to wear the Tiger uniform. He played at RIT from 1982 to 1986, missing the entire 1985 season due to back injury. He returned in 1986 to help guide the Tigers to an 11-3 record and their fourth straight trip to the NCAA Division III playoffs where they lost in the first round. Purcell played three seasons under Bill Tierney (now head coach at Princeton) and one year for Bill Glennon (athletic director at Phillips Exeter Academy).
Purcell regularly guarded the opposition’s top scorers and consistently shut them down. In the four years that he played, RIT won 45 games and lost only 10. He was named to the Empire Athletic Association All-Star Team three times and earned third team All-American honors in 1984. He was a three-time team captain and helped lead the Tigers to three EAA titles (14-1 league record).
