Wrestling on the Institute’s first team, Charles F. Cala was one of two grapplers chosen to attend the NCAA and AAU pre-Olympic Championships in 1929. He was the first Mechanics Institute athlete to score points in the nationals. Cala scored 75 points in three years of competition, guiding the team to an 18-5-1 overall record. In 1929, Cala reached the quarterfinals at the nationals. The founder and two-year president of the Varsity "M" Club was a city champion in 1930 and earned a total of seven gold and silver medals in AAU competition. In 1970, Cala was named recipient of the Outstanding Alumnus Award, highest honor bestowed on an alumnus.
