While maintaining a 3.54 grade point average in applied mathematics, Barry Zacharias became the first and to date the only national champion in the history of RIT men’s swimming. An eight-time All-American, he was also the first to score more than 1,000 career points. As a sophomore in 1981-82, Zacharias captured the NCAA Division III 400-yard individual medley crown with a school record time of 4:08.7. It was the second of eight All-American honors over a stellar four-year career. A native of Millington, N.J., he held several school records and set several ICAC and UNYS conference and meet marks. Zacharias was the Senior Athlete of the Year in 1984 and earned RIT Athlete of the Week honors nine times during his career. He received his master’s degree in statistics from the University of Rochester in 1987.
