In the 1950’s, fencing flourished at RIT. Barbara (Brill) Lare ranked among the very best. During her career, the team captured 36 straight matches, including two very rare shutouts. Lare fenced four seasons, highlighted with a 9-1 record in 1954-55 when RIT won the Intercollegiate Women’s Fencing Association title. Enroute to the crown, RIT won 10 straight matches, a first in the tournament’s 27-year history. As a sophomore, she placed sixth in the Amateur Fencers League of America Tournament, also won by RIT. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in 1957, Lare continued to compete in the National Amateur Fencers League of America and was a member of United States Olympic squads in 1964 and 1968, serving as an alternate.
