Although Allan Shepard never had the opportunity to play varsity hockey at RIT, he was very instrumental in the sport’s development. Through the efforts of Shepard and others, varsity hockey became reality in 1963-64 after four seasons on the club level. The Buffalo, N.Y. native is the first inductee under the founder’s category in the 35-year history of the RIT Sports Hall of Fame. Shepard served as president of club hockey and played three seasons. RIT Hall of Famer Jim Heffer took over coaching duties in 1962-63 and a year later the squad began varsity play. Shepard was invited back to drop the ceremonial first puck.
