A versatile performer, Al Vyverberg played forward and defense for the RIT men’s hockey team. In his four seasons, he scored 139 points. That ranked him 14th on the all-time scoring list. He also recorded five career hat tricks (three goals in a game). The native of Pittsford, NY was team co-captain and Best Defenseman as a senior. He was team Rookie of the Year in 1973 and Best Offensive Player in 1975. He also guided the Tigers to their first-ever ECAC playoffs. His best individual effort came against Brockport in 1976 when he tallied three goals and two assists. During his career, RIT played in the Finger Lakes Hockey League where Al was All-League as a freshman. He is the former school record holder with 35 assists in a season and seven points in a game. Vyverberg majored in Criminal Justice. For the past 25 years, Al has coached McQuaid Jesuit High School, guiding the team to four sectional crowns, one regional title and the New York State Championship in 2005. In 2010 he was inducted into the Frontier Walk of Fame as an amateur coach. Also manager of the Skating Institute of Rochester, he lives in Pittsford and has two daughters (Lia and Brett).
