ROCHESTER, NY -- RIT Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Jake Coon has signed a four-year contract extension keeping him with the Tigers through the 2017 season, Lou Spiotti, Jr., executive director of athletics at Rochester Institute of Technology, announced Thursday, June 25.
In four years at the helm, Coon has led RIT to a 68-13 (.839) record, four straight conference titles and four trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Tigers went the furthest in the NCAA Tournament this past season when they reached the championship game in May at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
"In four short years, Jake Coon has made a significant impact on our men's lacrosse program," said Spiotti. "He has brought us to the pinnacle of the college lacrosse world, and his leadership, work ethic and ability to motivate and direct young men is extraordinary. We are very pleased that he has agreed to this contract and he will be staying with RIT for the foreseeable future"
Coon, the 2011 USILA Division III Coach of the Year, has coached 21 All-Americans, 43 All-Conference selections and four Conference Player's of the Year (Jordan MacIntosh (Oakville, ON/Holy Trinity) - 2010, MJ Kiekebelt (Caledon, Ontario/St. Andrews College/Aurora) - 2011, Tyler Russell (Livonia, NY/Livonia) - 2012, Jack Krzyston (Bedford, NH/Bishop Guertin) - 2013).
Last season, Coon led RIT to a 19-3 overall record, including a 6-0 record in Liberty League play earning Liberty League Coach of the Year honors. Coon led the Tigers to a second straight Liberty League Tournament title, led by 12 Liberty League All-Conference selections, including Liberty League Player of the Year, Jack Krzyston (Bedford, NH/Bishop Guertin). In the NCAA Tournament, Coon and the Tigers defeated No. 5 Cabrini, No. 4 Tufts and No. 1 SUNY Cortland en route to reach the National Championship Game in Philadelphia, where the Tigers lost to Stevenson 16-14.
"We are extremely fortunate to have an administrative team that genuinely cares for athletics and our program's success," said Coon. "Dr. Destler, Dr. Cooper, and Mr. Spiotti have shown a tremendous amount of commitment and confidence in myself and the program, which we are all grateful for."
In 2012, Coon led the Tigers to a 16-3 record and a Liberty League title in the Tigers first season in the conference and a third straight trip to the NCAA Div. III Tournament. It was the third straight league title after winning back-to-back Empire 8 Championships in 2010 and 2011.
In 2011, Coon led RIT to a 19-1 record, a second straight Empire 8 title and a trip to the national semifinals. Since coming to RIT, Coon has coached 15 All-Americans, four conference players of the year, and led the Tigers to an 8-4 record in NCAA Tournament games.
Coon, a Homer, N.Y. native, is a 2001 graduate of Nazareth College, where he excelled on the field, helping the Golden Flyers to the 1997 NCAA Division III championship. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in social science and a minor in sports management. He was a four-time All-American, two-year captain and a two-time Division III Goalie of the Year selection.
